Sea Products Limited produces a number of Greenshell™ mussel products for export around the Globe, with our premiere line being mussels in the half-shell. However, our processing allows us to produce whole-shell mussels, and mussel meat as well as our half-shell products. Grown in the sheltered and picturesque coastal regions of Northland, the Coromandel, the Marlborough Sounds, the Banks Peninsula and Stewart Island, New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels are able to thrive in water of a naturally high quality, free from pollutants and rich in nutrients. Not only do they taste fantastic, New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels are also extremely good for you as they’re rich in omega oils and are an acknowledged source of dietary protein. Anti-inflammatory properties - recognised for helping combat Osteoporosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis – only add to this mussel’s benefits to your health. Historically, keen New Zealanders who loved the clean flavour, refined texture, and nutritional content of this Southern Ocean delicacy harvested New Zealand GreenshellTM mussels by hand at low tide. New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels are now cultivated using a float-suspended system of submerged ropes upon which the shellfish grow to maturity. This method guarantees the final product is free from sand, grit, and other impurities.
By 1991 the New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel industry had drawn $157 million in export earnings into the country. Sea Products Limited is proud to be a part of that industry, and has established a reputation for providing a product of impeccable quality.
Our facilities adhere to the stringent international health and hygiene standards that are required for processing shellfish. In this reguard, we employ the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) Plan to ensure that we consistently meet these requirements. Our processing is audited by the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry (MAF) and meets the requirements laid out under international agreements, including the Industry Agreed Standards (IAIS 003.5), the Fish Processing Circular 1995, as well as the standards set by the US Food and Drug Administration (we are NZ78SP). Aside from processing New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels for export, we also operate our own mussel farms in the Marlborough Sounds under the name Abel Tasman Seafoods Ltd., though we also source product from other export approved farms in New Zealand.
