Call it mussel envy.

As shellfish producers in British Columbia maneuver and struggle through a bureaucratic made-in-Canada quagmire, their peers in New Zealand have put together a united front to market their products worldwide.

“What they have, what we don’t have here, is government support,” says Roberta Stevenson, executive director of the BC Shellfish Growers Association.

Stevenson spent two days last week at the Aquaculture Pacific Exchange listening to Peter Vitasovich, chairman of the New Zealand Mussel Industry Council. read more
